As part of the #Storiel10 celebration activity series over Easter, it is a pleasure to welcome the Brick Consultant, Steve Guinness to the museum to present a fun workshop for the whole family . Steve came to prominence as the winner the first ever LEGO® Masters TV competition in 2017. He is also the designer of the LEGO® 'Ideas Typewriter' set.
To celebrate 200 years since the opening of the Menai Suspension Bridge, we commissioned Steve Guinness to make a 5ft long model of the bridge using Lego bricks. Built in 1826, and designed by Thomas Telford, the bridge was a valuable link between Anglesey and the mainland. In this exhibition, we wanted to show how the bridge has historically been depicted – using Storiel’s collection of topographical prints and artefacts, like this sampler and fireplace. There are more items related to the bridges in the Museum. We also want to inspire visitors to make their own bridge in Lego.
A chance to participate in a scratch the slate by creating a variety of shapes and patterns on pieces of “slate” with artist Elen Williams.
The aim of the project is to pilot how schools can more easily access national collections – and how galleries that are part of the CELF network might help facilitate that. This project offers one model of working. Storiel and Oriel Plas Glyn y Weddw have worked with two primary schools – Ysgol Garnedd (Bangor) and Ysgol Cymerau (Pwllheli) respectively, the artist Luned Rhys Parri and Amgueddfa Cymru – Museum Wales.
