Painting, Illustrations, Prints and Drawings
from Abersytwyth University’s Collection
Bert Isaac, painter, illustrator, printmaker and inspirational art teacher, was born in Pontypridd, South Wales, in 1923. Encouraged by his schoolteachers, he studied art at Cardiff from 1940-44, where he was influenced by Neo-Romantic artists such as Graham Sutherland, John Piper and Paul Nash. He was a prolific landscape painter, and favoured places that showed evidence of past human activity and industry, including Dorothea Quarry, Nantlle. He returned to some of these places often, documenting the passing of time and observing the rewilding of nature.
This exhibition is a selection of the 176 works by Bert Isaac, gifted from his wife, Joan Isaac, and his daughter, Dr. Susan Pochron, in 2017 to the School of Art, Aberystwyth University.
