Sian Owen

“My work is based on the patterns mainly seen on carved slates from the Ogwen Valley, where my grandfather used to split and dress slates at Penrhyn Quarry. The work here consists of prints made from rubbings of the original slates, along with my own additions in various media, interpreting the patterns and textures. I feel as though I’m remotely touching the traces of marks created by former quarrymen. These lost treasures have inspired me to delve into the history of the Carved Slates of Dyffryn Ogwen and the work of the Llandygai Archaeological Society, who document these slates. I’ve explored local history and realised the wealth we hold that remains unrecorded- and the potential for entire communities to celebrate and take pride in the history of our visual art”
