Isabel Adonis was born in London to a Welsh mother, Catherine, and a West Indian father, Denis Williams. She was a homemaker and he was an artist and writer. His artwork now hangs in the Tate Gallery.

She moved to Khartoum in the Sudan when she was six and spent two years there where she was influenced by Islamic Art. In 1959 she came to live in North Wales and was educated at John Bright Grammar School in Llandudno.

From an early age she experimented with textiles and quilt making and later moved on to making cloth pictures and dolls. In 2008 she found a canvas on the road and took it that she should begin painting. She was influenced by the folk art of America and seeing a painting of a girl with a cat she painted a girl with a crow, the crow symbolising her inner world and its symbolism in Welsh Mythology. She loves colour and paints in acrylic and uses collage elements.

Isabel has previously shown at Ucheldre Centre and at Mostyn, Llandudno. In 2024 she was commissioned to create a painting for the National Library of Wales, Aberystwyth and this year twenty more paintings were bought. The commissioned painting, “Going to Africa” is currently part of the ‘Portraits and Power’ exhibition at the National Library which runs until 30th May 2026.

As well as the works in the  exhibition, Isabel has additional work for sale, which are shown here and can be viewed on request or purchased directly with Storiel.
