To celebrate the newest release by Cardiff based producer Don Leisure . Storiel , the Museum of Gwynedd are proud to present a day of talks and discussions about the release of the legendary Sain records first predominantly sample based albums. Tyrchu Sain.

Utilizing the wealth of compositions from Sain records audio vaults , Don Leisure has crafted an album’s worth of tracks from Sain recordings from Monmouth’s Rockfield studios , Cardiff’s Stacey Road and their own Gwernafalau studio comprising of samples and loops from bands such as Bran, Endaf Emlyn , Edward H Dafis and Sidan.

The first talk will feature Jamal in conversation with one of Sain’s founders and most prominent musicians Dafydd Iwan. This fascinating talk will delve into Jamal’s sonic journey through one of Wales most prominent labels and discuss with one of its founder’s why Sain records continues to “Yma o Hyd”

The second talk will be an talk about sampling records as Jamal choses some of Sain records back catalogue looking for “the perfect beat”. In conversation with Rhys Lloyd Jones , Storiel’s Engagement and Learning officer we will delve into the creative process of creating new compositions out of existing tracks. This talk will be followed by a listening party of Tyrchu Sain that will showcase the new tracks (Featuring contributions from the likes of Gruff Rhys and Carwyn Ellis ) along side the original Sain compositions.

Painting and Poems Workshop

12 - 15 August 2025

Art and poetry workshop under the care of Elin Alaw. Come and illustrate a piece of the history of the Gwynedd quarrying area, in this mixed media workshop. There will be an opportunity to discuss the form and quality of an old quarryman's tin, and then experiment with charcoal and watercolour to bring life to our images. Finally, we will incorporate Glan Tecwyn's poem into our work. This two-hour session, suitable for children aged 8 and older, is open to all parents, who are also welcome to participate. No prior experience in creating art is required. Limited numbers, so please book your place in advance.
